Your wiring loom will have to be altered as most ancillaries have swapped sides and the starter motor is now a pre-engaged unit as opposed to an inertia type. Radiator hoses and heater hoses have to be sorted as do the brakes and exhaust and the dozens of little jobs that will crop up. The last major job is the moving of the gear lever hole and mounting the gearbox cross member. With the engine and box in place, measure from the centre of the original gear lever hole to the centre of the new gear lever, say 50 mm, now mark out a SQUARE around the original gear lever hole in the tunnel and ADD your measurement, (in our case 50 mm) to the rear of the SQUARE that you have marked out. Now carefully cut this RECTANGLE out and turn it around 180 degrees and refit it to the hole and the gear lever should now be central in the hole. A small adjustment may be necessary. When it is in the right place weld in back into the tunnel. The gearbox cross member that came with your Sierra gearbox should fit nicely under the floor and all that is required is to drill up through the mounting holes and into the floor of your car. Make a plate about 3 mm thick by 150 mm by 50 mm for each side of the tunnel and this will be sufficient to spread the load of the weight of the gearbox into your floor. Use 4 new bolts with nyloc nuts of at least 10 mm diameter.
Sort out your brakes, relocate your battery, put fresh oil in your engine and your gearbox, oil filter, air filter, new plugs and points, make an exhaust system, etc., etc.
Is it worth it??? Damn right it is. Your car will be much more useable for longer journeys, more economical and much faster in all situations. Is there a down side??? Yes, the front of the car will be heavier, you just added about 70 kgs in weight to one end of your car, it will want to go straight on at corners and it will look like your front suspension has collapsed, but these small details can be sorted out and all will be well again. Cost depends on many things, but a full DIY job should be around £600 - £800 using mostly second-hand parts and no labour charges, but it will take a few days hard work and lots of grazed knuckles. A professional job is likely to cost about another £1000, but is well worth it. One last thing, get a new quick shift gear lever, NOT a kit, this will transform the whole driving experience, and besides, if you try to use the sloppy old Sierra one, you won’t get all the gears as the handbrake is in the way.

what about fitting a YB Cosworth???
