Premises and overheads are a major factor in today’s businesses. Everyone wants a decent wage to live on, so staff are expensive, premises are extremely expensive to rent or to buy, with vehicle workshops demanding £8 per square foot per year in rent alone, then there are business rates, electricity, telephone etc., etc.
By the time you add in all the extra costs of insurance, (very necessary in today’s climate of always looking for someone to blame), VAT, income tax, National Insurance, plus the cost of professional services such as solicitors and accountants, etc., it makes you wonder why we bother. And to top it all, because you are your own boss, everybody thinks you’re a millionaire, as if.............
Many of the government schemes to help small businesses, do just the opposite. The other day there was an advert on TV about taking on an apprentice and how it would help my business, so I phoned for details. It turns out that we get an idiot for three days a week, but we pay him or her for 5 days work. The other two days they are at college learning all the wrong skills from idiot mechanics who now teach, because they can’t get a real job, and the government gives the college the grant? So how does that benefit my business???
So be thankful you have an ordinary job, even if it is boring. You can skive off for a couple of hours and still get paid, you can make giant cock-ups and still get paid, you can go on holiday - and still get paid. You can even phone in a sicky and still get paid. If we don’t work, we don’t get paid. If we do work, we don’t always get paid.
