Darren and I were chatting one day about the green Mk 2 X-Pack we built a while ago, and agreed we would like to build another kit without the air scoops, which act as an air brake if they are left closed off as in most road car applications. A short while later, a new customer called in and explained that he wanted a Mk 2 built with a streamlined fat arch kit and could we build it. We looked at each other and said nothing.
Here you can see the outcome of that enquiry. The original Escort swage line continues from front to back and original arches are retained to give some shape and style to the new structure. X-Packs and other ‘wide body kits’ are usually just flat surfaces, which are of course easier to make. We also incorporated original lower rear corners to further reinforce the ‘original’ look to the bodywork. One final detail was the original fuel filler cap has been recessed into the wide arch and a standard, non locking cap fitted for that period touch, even though it is only a ‘dummy’. The entire structure is made in steel and fully welded and is seen here with just a fine coat of primer to prevent rusting before it goes away to be painted. We also fitted one of our fully welded cages with door bars recessed into the doors.
Needless to say, the customer was delighted with the result which was of course better than expected.
